I would LOVE to know where they came up with this idea from. I mean, when I was denied for a grad school I went to it never even crossed my mind that it could have ANYTHING to do with my race. I'm pretty sure it had to do with my applying to school above what my GRE scores would allow me to get into.

And I'm pretty sure no schools writes and says "Oh well, hey we thought you were awesome but we had to give it to these poor black girls instead cause the administration told us to! So sorry!" PLEASE. How entitled and bullshitty can these girls get. They were probably denied because they don't work hard enough and expect shit to just come their way.

Exactly. It doesn't sound like there's a case here at all.

The "points system" that Michigan used for a while, there was more evidence, but here it really just sounds like sour grapes by the plaintiffs.

Yeah, how would they even know exactly why they were denied admission?

The only thing I could imagine is they were rich kids whose parents knew someone at the school. But if that were the case and they were really appropriate material for the school some OTHER kid would have gotten denied by affirmative action.

So basically...they're grasping at straws here and coming up with nothing. It's not going to go well for them. And it'll likely plague them the rest of their lives. Good luck girls! Can't wait for future potential employers to dig THIS one up.

I think a lot of people have no clue how this shit actually works. I STILL hear people complain about affirmative action keeping them out of the University of Michigan. Despite the fact that voters in the state of Michigan approved a ban on Affirmative Action. Back in 2006. People can be so damned stupid sometimes.

I wish there weren't truth in that statement.

And from what I hear, because Texas has that automatic 10% rule (which I think they changd to 8% because of volume - the top 8% of Texas in-state seniors who apply to the Texas system are automatically admitted to Texas) the remaining slots are extremely competitive. So if they didn't get automatic admissions, there's no reason for the to expect admissions otherwise.

Ah, okay. That sounds a lot like the NJSTARS program (free entrance to a community college, then a scholarship after transferring to a state school).

I would LOVE to know where they came up with this idea from.

They kind of buried the lede here -- it took me a re-read:
Most entering freshman at Texas are admitted because they are among the top 10 percent in their high school class. The Texas policy applies to the remaining spots and allows for the consideration of race along with other factors.
IOW, she didn't graduate in the top 10% of her class (should have studied harder, then) and got thrown into the pool for remaining slots with the rest of the riff-raff.

Per the NYT:
Students in the top 10 percent of Texas high schools are automatically admitted to the public university system. Ms. Fisher just missed that cutoff at her high school in Sugar Land, Tex. She sued in 2008, challenging the way the state allocated the remaining spots using a complicated system in which race plays an unquantified but significant role ( ... )
