So horrified at these stats and at this young woman's plight, omg.

I never call people in these kinds of situations, but...would it help? Is there a chance I could make things worse for her somehow, even if I'm polite? Because if it can't hurt and could help, I might have to.

Well, there is a chance for everything, this is a complicated situation and this is a prosecutor who is versed in law. But you can say they can't know she killed this man, that she was the only one arrested; they probably wouldn't have arrested anybody if she was the one killed by these people. And all chances are that it was self-defense (it definitely was). And how vulnerable and unjust is the situation of black trans women.

This is seriously fucked up, though I'm not surprised that it happened. I do think this article does a great job of dissecting exactly why the court system is so unjust to trans women of color, though. Here's hoping the charges are dropped.

The petition site won't let me read the letter. Is there anyone who could copypasta the full text? I want to know what I'm signing so that I can add additional comments without being repetitive.

Also, does contacting the Attorney have an impact if we aren't from Minnesota?

It's going to have less of an impact if you aren't one of the people that has the power to vote him out, point blank. However, on the other hand, getting a steady stream of calls and letters, regardless of their voter registration, is most likely going to at least make him stop and think about whether he wants to be the person whose name is on this. Plus, even though people outside the county can't vote against him, they can support his opponent in the next election in various ways.

I was Googling to see if it was indeed an elected position (I was 99% sure, but you have to love inconsistency of positions in the US) and I found his Mike Freeman for Hennepin County Attorney page on Facebook. It's from 2010, but you can still post on the wall, I believe. It might not hurt to remind him that he is an elected official and pursuing this course of action might affect him negatively if he plans to run for reelection (or for any other office).
