Labour supporters are cleverer than Tories, Canadian study claims.
If you are clever, you vote for Labour and Ed Miliband. But if you are not so bright the chances are you will back the Tories.
That is the conclusion of experts who studied research comparing childhood intelligence with political views in adulthood in 15,000 people.
They found that intelligence, rather than education, wealth or social status, decides whether people are narrow-minded or bigoted in later life.
“Cognitive abilities are critical in forming impressions of other people and in being open-minded,” says the paper by Brock University in Ontario, Canada which is published in journal Psychological Science.
The authors found a strong link between low intelligence both as a child and an adult, and right-wing politics. “Clearly, however, all socially conservative people are not prejudiced, and all prejudiced persons are not conservative,” it added.
The study was based on two UK studies from 1958 and 1970, where children were assessed at 10 and 11, and then asked political questions at 33.
