Stephen Colbert super PAC hits Mitt Romney on Bain record
Will Stephen Colbert run for president of the United States of South Carolina?
“I’m exploring right now,” Colbert told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning. “I’m a one-man Lewis & Clark, and I’m just looking for my Sacagawea.”
Days after handing over control of his super PAC to fellow Comedy Central host Jon Stewart, Colbert - who is also a native of Charleston, S.C. -- told Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” that he hasn’t decided on whether he’ll make a bid for higher office.
But there’s one problem, as Stephanopoulous noted: Colbert has missed the deadline to get his name on the ballot, and South Carolina election laws prohibit write-in candidates during party primaries.
“Now, they say I can’t get on the ballot in South Carolina, is that what (the state GOP executive director) is saying?” he asked Stephanopoulous.
“Yep, no write-in,” the “This Week” host responded.
“They said you can’t go to the moon,” Colbert said. “They said you can’t put cheese inside a pizza crust. But NASA did it. They had to, because the cheese kept on floating off in space.”
Given that other candidates haven’t ruled out bids for third-party runs, Colbert told Stephanopoulos that he “might go as a fourth- or fifth-party candidate.”
And he defended a faux-attack ad on former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R) that the Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super PAC unveiled over the weekend. The spot seizes on Romney’s “corporations are people” remark as well as his record at Bain Capital and concludes that the former Massachusetts governor is “a serial killer.”
“If that’s not accurate, I hope they take it down,” Colbert said of the ad. “I don’t know if Mitt Romney is a serial killer. That’s a question he’s going to have to answer. But I know one thing, that sounds like it’s superstar actor John Lithgow voicing that, and he played a serial killer on ‘Dexter.’ Two points make a line.”
