The Lorraine Motel, where King was assassinated, is now a civil rights museum. I highly recommend it if you are ever in Memphis. You can't go on the balcony, but you can see the room he stayed in when he was there.

Photos of lynchings make real the intimidation and terrorism that existed in that time and place. Obviously, it's horrible to see and the world is a little less bright after you realize (again) that this happened and was real. But it seems important to remember these individuals died this way and that many lived in this atmosphere.

and here's a recording of "We Shall Overcome" by Pete Seeger, including the verse specifically about Montgomery, Alabama

Seeger is a white folksinger, but civil rights were one of his major themes so they were used at a lot of protests. His banjo:
