In before anyone can debunk this 'cause I don't want to know. I'm certain some animals register the young of another species as needing protection--yes, only anecdata, deal--so I'm deciding that's what happened here. Now we just need the lions to patrol for these bastards.

Tons of animals adopt juveniles of other species, but I've only heard it being widespread in domesticated animals. (I once saw my childhood dog try to nurse 5 wk old kittens.) OTOH, there have been lots of documented cases of animals protecting humans in dangers-- dolphins come most readily to mind.

This poor girl. I hope she stays safe. And I hope lions eventually eat the fuckers who abducted her.

I remember seeing some clips a while back of a leopard (I think) trying to take care of a baby monkey. And a lioness caring for a gazelle. She was grooming it and stuff like a baby.

The article itself mentions that the lions could have mistaken the girl's crying for the sounds of a cub in distress.

Yes but I know people who wouldn't believe that. That was one person's opinion--prove it! But a loved one ran into a wolf and, on another occasion, a wolverine when she was a small child wandering alone. From what she describes, both figured out she was a pup and acted accordingly. I believe the lions may have recognized her as a mammal in distress, not necessarily a weird-looking lion cub. ;)
