Source Transcript US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton addresses the UN in recognition of International Human Rights Day. It's 30 minutes long but honestly a very powerful speech. It recognizes a lot of difficulties with regard to international queer and trans rights, such as the idea that being queer or trans is a Western (read:white) invention, as well as deeply held religious and cultural beliefs. She also addresses the fact that the US doesn't at all have the best history on queer and trans issues. I'm usually a Debbie Downer about this stuff but it's just such an inspiring thing to hear from someone with so much political clout.
My only real issue with this is that past a few token mentions of trans rights this is very much focused on queer rights. I hope that there is much more talk about trans rights and gender identity in the future.
