US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton addresses the UN in recognition of International Human Rights Day. It's 30 minutes long but honestly a very powerful speech. It recognizes a lot of difficulties with regard to international queer and trans rights, such as the idea that being queer or trans is a Western (read:white) invention, as well as deeply held religious and cultural beliefs. She also addresses the fact that the US doesn't at all have the best history on queer and trans issues. I'm usually a Debbie Downer about this stuff but it's just such an inspiring thing to hear from someone with so much political clout.

My only real issue with this is that past a few token mentions of trans rights this is very much focused on queer rights. I hope that there is much more talk about trans rights and gender identity in the future.

fucking valuable thing, oppression, human rights, united nations, dont ask dont tell, usa, bad assery, homophobia, hillary clinton, lgbtq / gender & sexual minorities, totally awesome
