I hate that Clarkson says things like that, but UNISON taking them to court after giving out signs at rallies calling for the graphic deaths of politicians who they take offence to is a bit rich.

It's just Clarkson being Clarkson. It's why he's loved and why he's hated. Sad product of a scared society.

but the Tories and the Lib Dems and the whole establishment are the ones damaging this society and damaging people within it and the protesters are just standing up for themselves in the way that we are allowed to in a democracy.

The Tories and Lib Dems are also standing up for themselves in the way we are allowed to in a democracy.

Sorry, I don't think anyone should be threatened with death for their beliefs or actions - even if those beliefs and actions are horrific.

We don't have a referendum on every single decision the government ever makes. That's not how democracy works.

As you know (but to clarify the issue anyway), a larger proportion of people voted for the Conservatives than voted for the second most popular party Labour. Labour and the Conservatives would never make a coalition, but the third most popular, the Liberal Democrats, could make an alliance with one of them. Gordon Brown decided that he wouldn't be interested, so the Lib Dems allied with the Conservatives to form a coalition.

The Conservatives then did exactly what they promised to their voters and the Lib Dems let them... Democracy in action. :(

I agree there is almost no democracy in Britain (fucking FPTP, really?) - which is part of why I cannot bring myself to join a union even though, as a trainee engineer, I would qualify. I don't want my money and support fed to a party who committed war crimes.

But honestly, I agree with you. But I also think that death should not be threatened to anyone. I know this is a somewhat personal opinion, but I have to agree with Tony Benn on this one ^^;

I understand and tolerate it, but don't support it. Either side. I'm not going to stop cut protestors singing those songs but, equally, I can't stop the right wing doing it either. (I know lots of very, very poor right-wing voting people in my area who wish for the death of socialists because they think they wrecked the economy - trying to explain to them that the left is okay actually whilst they scrape together enough money to live is impossible).

Midlands. Very strong angry Tory presence here. We tend to have councils of Conservative majority with Labour Opposition.

I essentially agree with you.
I woish the discussion had stayed with the reasons for striking and not strayed the the relative eejit-ness of Jeremy Clarkson.
