What does one say instead of dumb? Stupid? I'm actually asking, I'm not trying to be smart. I mean, I know the historical meaning of dumb, but surely it's not still used in that context anymore...or maybe I'm unaware.

I don't know ANYONE who uses it in that sense anymore. I can't speak for English-speaking countries except the U.S., but here it just means stupid to the vast, VAST majority of people.

Language changes over time. Word meanings shift. I think that's happened in this case. And while the history of the word is unfortunate, I really question the need to avoid using it, when it doesn't have those associations anymore except for people who happen to know about its etymology.
