And before that, when I worked in retail, I was paid on a pre-paid Visa card because I didn't have a bank account for direct deposit (Because I Got Into It with Chase after they charged me for three overdraft fees of $32 each when the state took money illegally out of my account-- lol that is another whole thing I won't get into here).
Those had fees for using them, fees for not using them, fees for checking balance, fees for withdrawing money, fees for everything. So I was getting paid about $350 a month at the time, and the only way I could avoid it going to Visa was withdrawing everything at once (~luckily~ I wasn't paid enough to have to use more than one atm transaction for that) and the only fee I would get then is--you guessed it-- the atm transaction fee. Before that, I'd have to go to a place like Moneytree or worse to cash my paycheck, and they would take fees and a percentage. And of COURSE, I had to still give money to big banks because a lot of bills had to be paid with money orders. There's just no way to get around needing a bank in this day and age.
Now I do my banking at a couple of community banks that are awesome, and relatively fee-free. I even get some pretty epic interest on my checking. (It used to be 4%, but they've been gradually lowering, down to %2.6) Both banks have free atm usage, plus competitor atm fee refunds.
