Yeah, I kind of wish the celebs would just do something constructive, like send a bunch of pizzas or sandwiches, rather than "publicly showing their support." I was at OWS last week, when Russell Simmons showed up. As a matter of fact, he gave a press conference about ten feet away from where I was sitting. It was a little baffling and sad how so many people dropped what they were doing to literally climb on each other so they could see him.

Maybe it's the opposite of poor people voting Republican. They think they'll be rich someday and they don't want to pay taxes when they get there. How many rich celebs end up broke? They might end up back in the 99% percent and want some rights when they get there. Or maybe they realize the 99% won't be buying their products if they're so poor they can't even make ends meet. :\

Just some ridiculous speculation.

agreed. a lot of them can still identify with the lower class even though they aren't a part of it anymore.

Right - like JK Rowlings, she was on the dole before the HP books came out, and she's still sympathetic with people without money because she remembers how little of it she once had.

This.

The snark in this article is uncalled for, and petty. (And this from a restaurant critic.... let's put him back on reviewing restaurants, and keep him from the OpEd page.)

While I can agree that maybe not all are actually there because they actually empathize, what were the income numbers for the 1% that are mathematically excluded? Because I seem to remember it being massively high. Maybe I am just misremembering information, though. =/

According to this site, the 1% starts at $380,000 a year. I've heard other places -- here, even -- saying it starts at $500,000. Not sure, though.

No, 380k is too low. I've seen estimates placing it between $533,000 and $560,000, fwiw.

Yikes. 380k still seems like such a large amount of money to live on every year, to me, let alone 533-560k.

Some celebs may have donated to the cause, idk. I know there are places where you can donate to OWS to help them buy food and supplies and stuff. But I agree that they shouldn't show up unless they really plan on occupying. Don't just stay there, get your camera time and leave. Occupy the fuck out of Wall Street,
