I feel kind of weird about this. I'm a Texan, where we've had a dream act for some time. I'm extremely liberal, and really do support illegal immigrants being able to attend state universities. However, I don't think that state funds should go to illegal immigrants, especially because of our shitty economy right now. Maybe that makes me seem like a terrible person, but I think that an illegal immigrant should have to pay the full tuition.

Except they can't, and you are basically relegating those students to a life of poverty and menial jobs, or crime and gangs. Maybe it's not a responsibility we "have to" have, trying to bring these kids up so they can achieve and be part of an educated population, but these kids are basically American. They are not going to go back to their countries (or they might but they will come back because they are Americanized; heck, my father came here when he was 29 illegally and tried to go back once he was able to get asylum--long story--and he just could not acclimate anymore). We need to embrace them as part of the tapestry of our country, because even though we don't "have" to, we should...these kids aren't going anywhere, and it behooves us to help them become educated for a vast variety of reasons.

You realize that denying a person the ability to improve themselves means they suffer economically? And our biggest problem is the demand side of the economy right now. People have no money.

So, cutting education and denying anyone the ability to make themselves more economically viable makes no sense to me, and it really shocks me to see a so-called very liberal person applying this "bad economy" reasoning to punish people who need the help the most.

I am, quite frankly, shocked at some of the comments this post is getting, myself.

What gets me is the bad economy reasoning. I mean, do we really need non-Republicans using that to screw MORE people?

It's just another way to scapegoat undocumented workers.

You want to block their access to education simply because they're not citizens, through no fault of their own (their parents brought them here as babies).

How the fuck does that make you "extremely liberal"?

You just expect them to do it with zero financial aid? How many undocumented immigrants do you think can afford that?

I assume there any many forms of financial aid available to illegal immigrants besides state funding.

I guess my thought process is this - I don't believe that illegal immigrants should have any kind of penalty (meaning extra cost or some kind of quota at universities, etc). However, I don't think there should be government funding, because after all, they are illegal immigrants. We, as a nation, should be encouraging legal immigration (which needs a ridiculous amount of reform), while providing ways for illegal immigrants to become legal immigrants. And I feel like doing this would, 1 - encourage more illegal immigration, 2 - send a message to immigration officials that there is no need for reform, because after all, the children of illegal immigrants/illegal immigrants are getting an education.

You assume? Why do you assume that?

I assume because I honestly don't know for sure? I would imagine and hope that there are advocacy groups & other organizations that exist to help illegal immigrants go to college. I'm sure that many Hispanic/Latino advocacy groups are able to provide some kind of financial support. And maybe there are scholarships for illegal immigrants specifically (I don't know this at all, but I was saw one for being left handed, so, you never know.)

Well I don't think undocumented immigrants should be limited to scholarships from Hispanic advocacy groups. The rest of us have access to financial aid, why can't undocumented immigrants? Education is the key to making our country a better place, it allows people to be more productive members of society. Why deny someone that simply because of their country of birth?

Oh I didn't mean that they should be limited to financial aid solely from Hispanic groups. Primarily, they would probably be able to offer the most support though, and connect people to other useful sources for aid.
