the notion of an innate loyalty among ethnic Chinese

I'm sorry, what? An "innate loyalty among ethnic Chinese"? You have got to be fucking kidding me.

And as far as Gary Locke's normality goes, hell yeah. Better to have a man of the people than some stuck up diplomat who is ushered around and gets the gilded tour, which many Mainland Chinese politicians/officials strike me as being.

Chinese race. Pfft. We all fell out of the trees in Africa, climbed out of the same oceans, formed our elements from the same stars.

Enough with the Special Racial Snowflake propaganda crap.

And good on the ambassador for acting like a normal human being.

“...as everyone knows, this only reveals America’s despicable desire to use Chinese against Chinese and provoke political chaos in China,” the newspaper said.

Yeah, I'm sure there was a whole bunch of advisors standing outside Starbucks, checking on whether he looked humble enough to provoke just enough chaos in China... /sarcasm mode off

He sounds like a really nice, normal guy. I won't be surprised if China sends him back in a month or so, ancestral roots or not.

Probably. He's living proof that this so-called genetic 'innate loyalty' is hogwash.

I hope that even if China does, he leaves a strong impression on those who have seen him and influence them to think "Hm... this guy showed us something different that's worth pursuing."

partly due to an unease among Chinese authorities - accustomed to lavish official trappings and distance from ordinary folk

and those same corrupt officials wonder why people hate them and have a problem with their hubris... perhaps it was time for someone to burst their bubble...

Not gonna lie, I'm lol'ing to myself at the idea of a "humble-off", like one paper in the post basically called for.
