The Killing of Troy Davis

If the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has its way, Troy Anthony Davis will be killed by lethal injection at 7 pm on September 21. His body will be carried out of the maximum-security prison in Jackson, the word “homicide” printed on his death certificate-the thirty-fourth US prisoner put to death this year.

I am against capital punishment 100% of the time. But this case especially leaves me sad and also puzzled. If there is any doubt, why risk undermining their precious ultimate deterrent? This is ridiculous, and depressing, and I really hope somebody unfucks this in time.

But Davis is a black man convicted of killing a white police officer-and in Southern and Northern states alike, this fact alone will trump all others

This. I have a really hard time imagining this happening (both his sentencing in the first place, the fact that he got the death penalty, the fact that he was denied clemency and denied appeal) if the above statement wasn't true

"Fewer than 40% of Georgia homicide cases involve white victims, but in 87% of the cases in which a death sentence is imposed the victim is white. White-victim cases are roughly eleven times more likely than black-victim cases to result in a sentence of death."

It's not surprising, but I'm still shocked that it's this high.

22% of black defendants who kill white victims are sentenced to death; 8% of white defendants who kill white victims are sentenced to death; 1% of black defendants who kill black victims are sentenced to death; and 3% of white defendants who kill black victims are sentenced to death.

jesus christ...

Aren't we like the only nation a part of the Geneva Convention or something like that that still has the death penalty??? The US is so ass backwards.

It's very true that the color of Troy Davis' skin and that of the police officer have influenced him getting the death penalty.

I don't think so, I'm looking at the list of Parties to the Geneva Convention and China is on the list and so is Japan and afaik they have the death penalty. As does most of South East Asia.

Yeah, Japan has the death penalty, and China most definitely does.

I'm not surprised, the Geneva Convention is more about rules of war and looking after POWs. I give China an F just for Tibet.

Twitter is blocking #TroyDavis from trending. It's trending in Sweden, but suspiciously not in Atlanta, even though Casey Anthony IS trending just b/c of comparisons between her and Troy Davis

Between Twitter blocking #TroyDavis and Yahoo Mail not sending mail about Occupy Wall Street, wtf, internet.

Yeah, that too. They're blocking the wall street TTs, too. On the bright side, though, the censorship is news in itself, and I've seen articles reporting on the fact that they have been blocked even from publications that haven't mentioned the protests

Oh, it will be delicious irony if their attempts at censorship backfire and continue to bring more press.

Each and every one of you are human beings with the power to refuse and resist participation in an immoral execution of a man who may be innocent. We implore you to use this power. Please remember your humanity!"
