I'm not a Christian anymore for those exact reasons; growing up, that's what I saw, and realized, "If this is what being a Christian is about, then fuck it, I don't want it." It makes religion look bad, it makes the "real Christians' (in quotes because that's a personal thing, and no one can tell you what you don't believe) angry, and besides that, it's just bad behavior. Don't hate in the name of a deity that is supposed to be all about love, and act like it's ok.
That's why him saying that really stuck out to me as a sort of a-ha moment. He admitted his true intentions, whether he meant to or not. And yet, people are still going to look at him and think "he's a man of God, therefore, ~he can do no wrong~ nor can he twist things to meet his own moral agenda." Ugh.
