DC got forgotten about practically while the attacks were going on.

i legitimately forgot that a plane hit the pentagon.

I was on Capitol Hill the day of the attack, and I wouldn't say that's the case. Remember that at the time, there were reports coming in about the fourth plane headed for DC and rumors of fires on the National Mall and car bombs at the State Department.

Granted, the image of the two skyscrapers burning and the people jumping out simply IS more intense in many ways. The real horror hit me after we were evacuated to a colleague's house and arrived to see that both towers were down.

I definitely remember the misleading reports about the Mall being on fire and car bombs. At the time, it scared me as much as seeing the towers fall, because not only could I not get in touch with anyone in NYC, both my parents worked in downtown DC and my brother at the Pentagon.

But there were just more cameras in Manhattan than there were in DC. There was just more press up there, all the morning shows were still on from before the attack started so the studios were already good to go for coverage, etc.

I was in NoVa... we were watching coverage in my english class... there was like no news coverage of DC except like some Picture in Picture even and I actually had friends who got called up as EMTs.

Yeah, I remember all sorts of rumors about various places in DC that got hit.
