Abortion counselling plan splits MPs

Aug 28, 2011 22:50

Ministers have caved in to backbench pressure to step up the level of independent counselling women receive before terminating a pregnancy, to the anger of some MPs who believe the government is playing “politics” with women’s abortion rights.

Why do women need the help of a law to receive "independent counseling"?

Women can talk to their friends, their family, or their religious leaders to seek advice on abortion. If they want professional advice they can hire an independent professional of their choice. No laws needed.

This is how this "small government" thing works -- people are able to do things on their own.

They already get counselling from the abortion clinics, but the MP has a problem with this, because she thinks their counselling is in some way biased.

God fucking damn it. Nadine fucking Dorries. I really need for her to fuck up so badly that she gets kicked out of parliament soon. Very very soon.

Actually, that goes for this entire government.

ETA: I don't quite understand what they're trying to achieve here.

It's the first step on outlawing Abortion altogether. They're trying to emulate the Christian Right/Anti Choice activists in the US.

FFS Dorries GTFO out of my goverment and take your emulating friends with you.

It appears that the coalition is united in deciding the legislation is unessessary which is probably a good thing, but dear I can't imagine how much the next goverment will have to clean up :(

*Headdesk*

*Facepalm*.

Hopefully there's only three more years of this goverment. And hopefully Dorries will lose her seat...

That Dorries turd again?!?!?!?!
God will she ever just piss the fuck off. Why are people taking her seriously? she's a troll, a real life troll who's only out to cause trouble in one of the very few areas where we can hold our head high and be proud that we don't have the backwards fuckery that dogs the US on the issue of abortion.

What really irritates me is that valuable debate time will be wasted on this nonsense.

I was just about to come here and post this.

Abortion clinics have a "conflict of interest" in offering counselling because they oviously want women to have abortions. Well, surely then independant counselling in an attempt to reduce the number of abortions (Guardian quotes 60,000 abortions, about 1/3rd of the current rate) could be prevented if this is implemented) is also biased.

GDI I'm already phobic about pregnancy, the 'permission' from two doctors, and the current wait times, this will not help me in any way.
