I was in either my social studies or history class my freshman year of high school when 9/11 happened. 10 seems so long ago, but at the same time really recent.

The exception was his first birthday, when relatives traveled from out of town to attend a family-focused party on the first anniversary of the attacks. Xavier's parents asked guests to place their palms in paint and leave handprints on a basement stairwell wall, hoping it would remind their boy that even when bad things happened, there would be plenty of folks who love him and would try to make it better.

Goddamn, this made me tear up a little.

I was born right on the edge of "growing up in the Cold War"; many of my younger friends have no personal experience with it, but it's not being taught in school history classes all that well, either. Lots of folks report that high school history classes just sort of cut off the teaching of history at World War II, and don't get into anything since then.

I think they included it just to show one of the things that changed since 9/11 - before you could pop back and forth over the border fairly easily, after all. So, yeah, they should have been aware and gotten the passports a lot sooner, but on the other hand, it adds to the message of the article.
