Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has advised the Republican Party to stay out of gay marriage.During a Sunday appearance on CNN's State of the Union, Giuliani told Candy Crowley that the GOP should stay out of people's bedrooms.

The 67-year-old Giuliani said he supports civil unions, not marriage, for gay and lesbian couples, but added that he didn't see any harm from New York's recently approved gay marriage law, which takes effect on July 24.

“I think that the Republican Party would be well advised to get the heck out of people's bedrooms and let these things get decided by states. And the reality is that this is something that New York decided by a democratic vote. I think it's wrong, but there are other things I think are wrong that get decided by [a] democratic vote.”

“You can live with it,” Crowley suggested. “You don't see any harm that's going to come to New York?”

“No,” he answered, “I don't see harm. Although I think it would be better for stability of families and everything else if we kept marriage between a man and a woman. I see more harm, however, by dwelling so much on the subject of gays and lesbians and whether it's right or wrong in politics.”

“I don't know what the heck the Republican Party wants to do getting involved in people's sexual lives and personal lives so much for. Stay out of it and I think we would be a much more successful political party,” Giuliani added.
