Governor Brown Signs FAIR Act, Teaching Gay History Now California Law

California Governor Jerry Brown moments ago signed SB-​48, also known as the FAIR (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful) Education Act, which states that California schools must include the contributions of gays, lesbians and transgender (LGBT) Americans, and the disabled, in its textbooks and in teaching of history and social studies classes.

I'd feel so much better about this if I didn't know that the kids will be "learning" about these things in severely over-stuffed classrooms in our rapidly disintegrating public school system from teachers who are likely going to be under no obligation to present the legally mandated material in a unbiased way, without editorializing.

But I suppose we should take our victories where we find them.

I'm glad that Governor Brown signed this one. I would've loved to have heard that there were successful, history making GLBT people in the world when I was a kid.
