Conservative Columnist David Brooks: The Mother of All No-Brainers

Jul 10, 2011 18:25

The Republicans have changed American politics since they took control of the House of Representatives. They have put spending restraint and debt reduction at the top of the national agenda. They have sparked a discussion on entitlement reform. They have turned a bill to raise the debt limit into an opportunity to put the U.S. on a stable fiscal ( Read more... )

If the debt ceiling talks fail, independent voters will see that Democrats were willing to compromise but Republicans were not.

Bullshit. The conservative owned and controlled news networks are going to create a narrative of Democratic Party intransigence and incompetence from tax and spend liberals and a GOP that is taking a tough and "brave" stance for America's future.

Well, they're going to try to anyway. Which is why Dems need to get out in front of it and start messaging the idea that this is complete and utter bullshit.

Oh, it's not a failure on your part. It's Poe's Law. Some of those T-shirts are subtle to the point that you can imagine (or have already seen) tea party members making those very arguments.

I actually really like the "Obama's right handed" shirt because it's wrong, but also because 80% of the people on Earth are also right-handed. It's doubly ridiculous!

All the sheeple get is the Republican claim that the Democrat Party want to raise your taxes. The media does not actually delves into these claims and reports with any accuracy. This is not the result of stupidity or incompetence. It is the result of a media designed to by the powerful to protect the powerful.

It's pretty much the same here in Germany. If the government raises taxes the opposition gets in a frenzy and the media acts accordingly.
Seriously, calculations I saw made clear that the tax reduction our current government is planning to offer next (election) year to stay in power would give each person around 10 bucks per month. That's roughly two salami pizzas. Why not keep this money and...y'know, use it to repair the broken education system etc.?

But THIS is of course not what the media is reporting, it's all about MOAR MONEY IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL POCKET! *sigh*

They did the same thing during the Bush years when we actually had a budget surplus. It was *insanity.* They managed to buy votes by giving out $200 checks.
