1755: BBC's Radio 5 Live is told by an anonymous News of the World employee, who was at this afternoon's staff meeting, that Rebekah Brooks was confident and calm. The mood was not openly hostile, but there was anger among staff. Mrs Brooks apparently said the News of the World had to be shut down because there was worse to come. She dodged a question about resignation and suggested she was the best person to lead the company out of its current difficulties.

jeezo how much worse can it get.

At this point, I actually quite want her to stay. Because she will be arrested and questioned at some point, and how toxic will her presence then be to Rupert and NI. If she went now they could brush it all under the carpet and say they've gotten rid of who was responsible.

I don't think we've even heard the worst of this story yet. At the moment she's such a liability for Rupert Murdoch, and I'm all for giving him just enough rope to hang himself.

I think so too. They are either confident it will go away or arrogant enouh to believe it wont adversely affect them.

I read somewhere that if there's worst to come it might be a good move to have her stay now. If she did go, and something else came out there might be a push for James Murdoch to resign.

I think this is why they wont let her resign. She's the only one standing between the Murdochs and the line of fire.

Maybe, we can't really know but I find it hard to believe that Rebekah Brooks as that selfless as to sacrifice her career for James Murdoch. I would've thought if that were the case she would've been out so quickly we wouldn't have seen her for dust. At this point I don't think anyone can know how it will turn out. But I do think Murdoch has made a miscalculation. I think he thought that closing the NOTW would give him a bit more breathing space than it has.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Murdoch definitely miscalculated. I love that so many charities are refusing the donations from the last edition.

Let her stay,! She was editor for the Sun too - maybe if the investigation goes on deep enough it'll bring down that rag as well *lives in hope*

Rumour has it that the Sun's just as guilty of phonetapping as the NOTW. We shall see...

Murdoch likes to keep his friends close. I bet she has serious dirt on Cameron. Oh I can't wait for that to come out!

Not sure how much of this to believe, but I was reading one bit of punditry that suggested that Murdoch really needed to buy up BSkyB because that's one of the few NI spinoffs that's turning a really good profit - Fox News in particular is circling the drain and that's not good for the general News Corp bottom line. If #hackgate makes that bid more difficult, and they've already put so many of their eggs in that particular basket, no kidding things are going to be difficult from here on out.
