Jewish court sentences dog to death by stoning

A Jerusalem rabbinical court condemned to death by stoning a dog it suspects is the reincarnation of a secular lawyer who insulted the court's judges 20 years ago, Ynet website reported Friday.According to Ynet, the large dog made its way into the Monetary Affairs Court in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish ( Read more... )

Ugh. Every religion has its crazies and, inevitably, the ones in your own religion piss you off the most.

When I went on the Birthright trip to Israel, we were told that we were going to take a bus through Mea Shearim, so we could see what it's like. All the women were told that we had to wear long skirts and long sleeve shirts (in 110 degree Jerusalem) just to ride a bus through the neighborhood. We actually ended up not going because it was deemed too dangerous; a previous Birthright group had gotten stones thrown at them because the were deemed "not respectful enough." /cool story bro

Seriously, the ultraorthodox are as repugnant to me as the wackos on the Christian right, if not more so.

Is this Satmar/Neuteri Karta territory, or a similar mindset? I've heard about these hardliners that sponge off the government, contribute squat, and then stone anyone who isn't shomer shabbos. They have just enough of a voice to cause trouble.

Neuterei Karta and Breslov, mostly. There's a few smaller sects there.

Also, it isn't wise to condemn all the ultra-orthodox across the board like this. There are some Haredim who have a strong work ethic, but it depends on the group. And most outsiders cannot tell the difference between a Haredim and a Hasidim which is enough to get you into trouble... most Hasidic groups do not like being affiliated with the Haredi because the hardliners are assholes, particularly to Hasids.

The best is when you see Haredi and Hasidic women battle it out in fist fights, honestly. Don't fuck with Haredi women, zomg. They will kick your ass.

You're right. I was a fool to lump them all in, especially since Charedi and Chasidim have had animosity dating back to the Vilna Gaon and the Baal Shem Tov. I like the Lubavitch, especially how open they are in sharing their knowledge with the world. I can imagine groups that have more in common tend to hate each other more. I know that Modern Orthodox and Charedi don't care much for each other, but I can imagine Chaisim and Charedi take the dislike up to 11.

I recall the couple in Ushpizin were Breslov.
