He neglects to point out that the dirty fucking hippies grew up to be the generation that implemented a lot of these policies.

Also I liked this routine better when Bill Hicks did it.

I take it you're referring to ex-hippies growing up and their politics leaning more to the right as they age, a pretty typical phenomenon? Selling out their political idealism and principles for that white picket fence and 2.5 children?

But this is a blanket statement. Plenty of ex-hippies kept their left-leaning attitudes. Ex-hippies helped form the Green Party. Some are now actually serving in Congress and pushing for progressive political legislation. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who considers himself a democratic socialist and provided a strong push for his state's adoption of single-payer health care, is the first who comes to mind.

I agree. I live surrounded by hippies who are still hippies. They had great values and kept them.

If only Bill Hicks hadn't left this world in '94, he might have been around to see Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission burn more hopes to the ground.

Hippie VW bugs didn't have corporate logos on the bumpers of their mass-produced paint jobs. (opening shot)
"HAIR!" was morphed from a dumb off-off-Broadway show into a national merchandising phenom by the not-too-bright son of a real estate zillionaire who tuned a dairy farm into an expensive, exclusive suburb. (closing shot)

The dfw's were right about cooptation, too.

Posted because I was impressed by the song, not the screen shots.

But you're welcome to disregard the message because of a few weak splash images.

dfwh's
thanks for catching my typo. I can't type for shit.

I wasn't disregarding the message, I was pointing out the attentiveness necessary to avoid cooptation. Which was insufficient in that clip. Heck, I didn't even look to see if the guy who did the narrative was the guy who strung the images.

I was [called] one of those dirty fucking hippies.
