This is actually kinda fascinating. Makes me wonder if the dumb ditz thing is something she plays up in public, cause she's actually, y'know, sorta eloquent.
She actually seems a lot more competent in her emails than she does when she interviews. Doesn't mean I like her politics, but reading through her emails, she doesn't seem as completely...stupid and ignorant as she does in interviews.
There's also the fact that some people just don't interview well, and are much more eloquent on paper than they are speaking aloud.
I never thought I'd say this, but...maybe Sarah Palin is one of those?
Either that or we face the depressing prospect that she's NOT actually as far-right as she appears, but that the far far right voting bloc in American politics is legitimately powerful enough - and there are enough of them - for pretending you ARE that fringe-level of conservative is actually a viable strategy for election.

tbh this is what I've always assumed was the case with her.
The Palin we all see and hear is a role she's playing to con conservative reactionary America into giving her power for pandering to their views while likely not really believing a one of them to any great extent. Hypocritical, deceptive and ingenious.
She angled for a vice presidential nomination months before John McCain picked her, but hesitated to endorse him until she got an explanation about "pro-environmental stands he's taking that could hurt Alaska."
"could hurt [state]" always means "could hurt [single industry that operates within state]" and never, like, people or the physical land of the state itself.
this makes me hate her even more.. she's not stupid but plays a dopey 'folksy gal' to rope in the voters (like Dubya) and basically threw all her principles out the window to attract her base (like McCain)
I find it pretty disgusting on her part, too, but there's a deeper issue that disturbs me more... when did such a significant portion of people in our country start believing that ignorance, and a lack of interest in ever rectifying it, was a qualification or high office?
anti-intellectualism has always sort of been a problem everywhere, just because intellectuals are always seen as élite, locked away and dispersing their pronouncements from on high. i mean, there is a point there, but to revel in ignorance isn't the solution, just as being locked away isn't the answer either.

For anyone interested in the emails, Washington Post has all of them here:
