the abuse of prisoners sometimes produces good intelligence, but often produces bad intelligence because under torture a person will say anything he thinks his captors want to hear - whether it is true or false - if he believes it will relieve his suffering.

I wasn't aware that one even had to be on the receiving end of torture to figure this out. This is pretty much exactly what fucking fifth grade history textbooks say under the heading "Why would anyone admit to being a witch?" It's one of like three things they get right.

It's what various high-ranking members of the armed forces have been saying since the torture debate started, too, but somehow certain people can't get it through their skulls. Hey! Your morality versus practicality argument is moot if it doesn't fucking work.

Torture has NEVER been used to get information, not really, not effectively. Torture has always been used for coersion - to confirm what people already know (which, therefore, you can verify) or get false information/confessions that suit their need

For information extraction it sucks. Theyw ill tell you all they know. All they don't know and that they're a small pink unicorn called Bernard - whatever will make it stop
