Lesbian cadet denied re-admission to West Point because DADT not yet repealed
A lesbian cadet who resigned from West Point last year in protest over “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” was denied for re-admission on Wednesday because of her sexual orientation.
Officials at the U.S. Military Academy said they had no choice but to reject Katherine Miller’s application, because the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy prohibiting gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military is not yet in effect.
“While the don’t ask, don’t tell policy was recently changed and will be repealed, the effective date has not yet been determined. Due to this situation, West Point is unable to offer her readmission at this time,” said Lt. Col. Sherri Reed, the academy’s director of public affairs, in a statement.
“The choice to seek re-admission is available to her once the repeal process is completed.”
Miller left the military academy in August following her sophomore year because she said she could no longer lie about her sexuality. She transferred to Yale, and applied for re-admission to West Point after President Barack Obama signed the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ into law.
Miller said she is giving up on her dream of graduating from the military academy.
