A law has come into force in France which makes it an offence for a Muslim woman to conceal her face behind a veil when in public.

What about the Muslims who were born and raised in France, who've been here their whole lives? Do they have to go to citizenship lessons? What about wearing the veil is so un-French, anyway? It's not even logical Islamophobia.

That sounds like the most likely outcome to me, OP. Someone who feels like his culture/religion demands that his wife be covered isn't going to shrug and get over it because France ruled otherwise. More likely, she can't go out without being covered so...now she can't go out.
And all this to "help" 2000 women? Sounds like the ultimate in concern trolling.

Nah, the ultimate concern trolling was when Quebec banned the niqab. There are about 12 women in the whole province who wear it.
