USC Students Protest "Offensive" Fraternity Email

Apr 04, 2011 17:10

EXPOSITION PARK (KTLA) -- Dozens of USC students walked out of class and staged a noisy protest to call attention to a sexist email believed to have been posted by a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

The email, believed to have been written by one of the fraternity members, intended to create some sort of list to detail sexual encounters. It was supposed to be the first in a series of emails called the "Gullet Report" which was supposed to "strengthen brotherhood and help pin-point sorostitues more inclined the put-out."

Members of Kappa Sigma refused to comment to KTLA about the email, which has now gone viral.

USC students say they are outraged by the email which spread through the campus like wildfire.

Lexi Marten told KTLA "I know guys will talk, but to go to the extreme of an email is too much."

Daren Fitch told KTLA that he doesn't think these actions should reflect on all fraternities at USC. "Most fraternities are not like that."

The protest was sponsored by students from the USC Coalition for a Safey Campus and Community, Women's Student Assembly and numerous other campus organizations.

Here's a portion of the email:

"I have come to write this memo to you today to educate on the only life worth living, that of a Cocksman. A Cocksman is taught to live by the two most applicable principles I know: The Pie and the Gullet. You may already be lost in trying to comprehend this logic. Do not worry this is completely understandable. By the end of this memo, you will not only gain a greater understanding of what it means to live, but you will have embraced a lifestyle. However, in order for this to happen you first must know a couple key terms. Note: I will refer to females as "targets". They aren't actual people like us men. Consequently, giving them a certain name or distinction is pointless."

The author of the email claims that women "aren't actual people like us men." He also refers to unattractive women as "filth" and told his brothers that "non-consent and rape are two different things." He encouraged his readers to have sex with "middle eastern targets" and provided names of women according to their ethnicity.

The email also asks members to rate their conquests and described certain kinds of women, such as a "loop 'n doop' which is "a target that is very easy to take down. All she needs is a good amount of liquor (loop) and she will be good to go."

The executive director of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Mitchell Wilson, told the Daily Trojan: "The content [of the e-mail] is contrary to everything [Kappa Sigma stands] for and we are not going to allow individuals to attempt to tarnish our name in any form or fashion.... We will pursue this as far as we can."

"The Interfraternity Council vehemently condemns the offensiveness of the recent viral email that has made victims of all women, individuals and chapters in USC's greek community," Pat Lauer, Interfraternity President told KTLA.
