Jerusalem bus bomb: Dozens hurt after blast at central bus station

Mar 23, 2011 10:48

A powerful bomb rocked Jerusalem's central bus station Wednesday, wounding at least 25 people, 15 of them seriously, authorities said.

No deaths were immediately reported in the first bombing to hit the city in seven years.

The massive blast could be heard throughout the city and blew out the windows of two crowded buses.

One of the drivers, Meir Hagid, said the explosion went off as he was pulling out of the station.

He said none of his passengers were hurt, and he screeched to a halt and let them off.

Jerusalem was hit with numerous suicide bombings during a Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s, targeting buses and restaurants.

The last suicide bomber struck in 2004.

The explosion came as tension have been on the rise between Israel and Hamas militants.
