In Montana, an Economic Boon Faces Repeal Effort

With his electrician’s tool belt and company logo cap, Rick Schmidt looks every bit the small-business owner he in fact is. That he often reeks of marijuana these days ... well, it is just part of the job, he said.

“I went on a service call the other day - walked in and a guy said to me, ‘What have ( Read more... )

Oh for fuck's sake. I'm so tired of every shred of progress being greeted by the spasmodic flails of people who are so god damned terrified of the world they live in, who simply can't cope with difference or change, and whose only coping mechanisms are denial, suppression and attack-

In the Legislature, a resurgent Republican majority elected last fall is leading a drive to repeal the six-year-old voter-approved statute permitting the use of marijuana for medical purposes, which opponents argue is promoting recreational use and crime.

-plus the tobacco industry wants it's monopoly back.

tobacco is grown down South, it takes a lot of land and a temperate climate.

Well, yes, but where a product is grown doesn't prevent it from infringing on a market. The tobacco industry is most likely afraid that acceptable medical use will lead to the marijuana being made legal for recreational sue- which would kill their tobacco market. They routinely use the Republican party to achieve their ends, so...

OMG, CRIME!!!

Montana crime rates year by year

Yup, your total number of crime has risen slightly over last few years, then fell a lot in 2009,... but its still significantly lower than it was 10 years ago. and you have almost 100,000 more people than you did 100,000 year ago.

So yes, you have more crime, total... but you have LESS per person than you did before legalization.

Well, the funny thing is, the majority of people here in Bozeman and the rest of western Montana by and large don't want to see the medical marijuana bill repealed-- there actually was an editorial here in the Bozo paper a few days ago from someone who disagreed with MMJ on the whole, but was adamantly against HB169 for the sheer fact that our MMJ law was a voter initiative and should only be repealed by the voters themselves. I think between this, the bill to invalidate the anti-discrimination ordinances here and in Missoula, and some of the other crazy bills proposed, the eastern MT-led tea partiers in state government here have really pissed off a good chunk of the populace, including people they need as key supporters, and thankfully, it looks like these bills, even if they do pass, will be vetoed and not brought up again, and this year's horrible legislative session will lead to more moderates being elected into state government again ( ... )
