She could be born American, therefore she herself is not an immigrant, but a first generation. Also, there are immigrants who oppose immigration. Yeah those are always fun to listen to. And by fun I mean endlessly frustrating.
IA. Considering how difficult it is to immigrate legally (they make *damn sure* you're coming to the US because you're needed).
Alas, those in the intended audience will probably take it seriously because it's more palatable to say "those foreigners are taking our jobs!!" than to examine other reasons why unemployment is so high.
Well, it's equally ridiculous because not all immigrants who come here to work stay here. A LOT of people just come here and work for six months, a year, whatever, and then go... elsewhere. A lot of international corporations NEED their people to be able to move to other countries because they're QUALIFIED and EXPERIENCED to do the work that's required and it would be far too costly to hire someone new and get them up to speed.
I remember an article here maybe 6 months ago on the INCREASE in legal immigration for jobs.
There are apparently many skilled workers being lured to the US for construction jobs and similar.
And, looking at that story, plus talking with people who are in that field and were actively looking for jobs, here's what happened:
The bottom fell out of the housing market, so that people who would normally move around some for jobs are unable to move. This created high unemployment in significant fields (like construction) in places that had previously been booming because all of those workers won't leave the depressed area. Meanwhile, foreign workers were sought to fill positions because Americans (with families and houses) are refusing to go where the jobs are.
I see no problem with this system, and it will fix itself over time. Cutting back on the number of legal immigrants will just give us a labor shortage and slow the economy down.
