TUCSON, Ariz. - In the latest milestone in Gabrielle Giffords' recovery from a bullet wound to the brain, the congresswoman stood up and looked out a window. Soon she will move to Houston, where she'll undergo extensive mental and physical rehabilitation.

Part of me hopes she'll still be able to speak, because I can only imagine she would have some damning words to say about the violent rhetoric that lead up to the attack.

Well, even if she can't speak, I'm sure they'll find ways of letting her communicate. My mom's nonverbal students used magnetized word boards.

I mostly remember because it led to some poignant moments... things like a then-5 year old putting together 'I love Mommy' - his first sentence - while said mother was visiting that day. It was the first she'd seen her son 'speak'. Moments like that made the work worth it, at least until my mom's body just wasn't cooperating with the physical side of things anymore - the carrying kids, etc.
