Not condoning what he did, but the man was just shot, people who were shot beside him died. PTSD and trauma do funny, irrational things to formerly rational people.

yeah :( though they don't play fair - if something like this hadn't happened, they would have straight made something up

I agree.

Although on the OTHER hand, I don't like that people are asking "what did they say" like it would excuse threatening someone like that.

It wouldn't excuse it, but it might help explain it.

They do, and PTSD is a real disease (mental illness) with real consequences.

Still, this man has committed a crime. Arrest him and put him on trial.

The correct verdict may well be "guilty except for mental illness" (or "not guilty due to mental illness", or whatever Arizona calls it), and it may well be that this man does not deserve punishment other than court-ordered psychological care. This is the humane way to treat this sort of situation, fair to both this person and the man he threatened. (This assumes, of course, that the judge and jury are fair and humane, and will correctly return a verdict of "not guilty due to mental illness" if the situation warrants it.)

sounds rational. I suppose I immediately jumped to the conclusion that this was an instance of inappropriate hyperbole, but without more context that was pretty hasty. I hope that they take his immediate circumstances and mental state into account.
