The folks in the audience for Jay Leno’s safe-for-all-audiences Tonight Show clearly would’ve rather had a visit from some cuddly zoo animals than what they got: an extended and at times awkwardly tense visit from HBO’s Bill Maher.

I would side with anyone over a Jay Leno audience, tbh.

I'm not really a fan and haven't watched the video yet, but Team Maher out of principle.

haha, me too, on all counts. I don't even like Bill Maher all that much but it sounds like the Leno audience were just being dumb.

Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head with that. I know Bill was serious when he asked them "Do you read?" and I think the overwhelming answer would be "No." I truly believe that to a rather large percentage of average persons on the street, everything Bill said with regard to the inflamed rhetoric on the right is new information.
Maybe "dumb" is too harsh and I would prefer to go with "ignorant and ill informed" but when that marker gets moved from its original position and a person sees that they have vast gaps in their understanding of the world and they willfully do nothing to correct that? That's lazy and dumb.
Those two words go a long way towards describing the main problem with our electorate just now, in my opinion.
