STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.
"We are not talking about a national ID card," Locke said at the Stanford event. "We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities." That's all well and good, but I give it about about 5.7 seconds before everyone's conspiracy theory-loving uncle/grandma/not-reading-for-comprehension relative starts forwarding this to all our interwebs inboxes:
"We are not talking about a national ID card. We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing eliminating online security and privacy."
And now that I've read it again, it just seems like a waste of time and irritation. Problems? What if someone else uses my computer aka my mom? What about international sites ie eBay - especially eBay where transactions are processed between people who may or may not even be in the US? I can't imagine most business websites overhauling anything either.

I'm not necessarily wild about what's being proposed here, but good grief, that eyepopping headline with the subsequent contents...
