So wait, is it okay the next time there's a post about African-Americans, I break out the .gif of the little boy having a fake heart attack and crying over KFC going bankrupt?

I see a clear double-standard in ONTD_P comment posting...

The first .gif is cool. The second one (seriously) is racist. Didn't we have this talk before?

I snuck onto ONTDP as a break from writing my undergrad dissertation, so this is going to be way shorter than the question deserves. Sorry!

Basically, though, there is a huuuge world of difference between a historically embattled minority group poking fun at something pretty harmless (like dancing) that the group in power does, and the group with all the power, all the money, and all the government representation doing the same thing to a group that has none of those privileges. Really, I don't think anyone's going to lose any sleep over teasing a member of one of the most notoriously clueless, rich white families dancing in a goofy way. Your counter-example of the little boy crying over KFC, though, is different. The stereotype of black people and chicken goes back a long way, and tries to tie people to the image of poverty, obesity, and undereducation by associating a traditional southern food with a shitty fast food chain that itself carries a lot of cultural baggage. I hope you can see how that's a lot worse that "lol, dancing!"

I'm afraid that much of this comes down to the simple fact that you are a member of the group in power, and the things that come out of your mouth will always be affected by that, no matter what you do. It's like when men say probably well-meaning but ignorant things about sexism and assault... people cringe more when they say it, mostly from instinct. It's not fair, but as long as your voice, and the voice of all white people, is given unequal legitimacy in this society, what you can say without being read as a douche will be different from what other people can say. The jokes you can safely make are not the same as other people.

No, it's not fair, but as long as we're talking about racial inequality breeding unfairness, let's talk about access to education, systematic disenfranchisement by our government, institutionalized racism that affects people's ability to get equitable healthcare, employment, and housing, not to mention skewed cultural depictions of black people.

Oh, you can, if you really want to. There's nothing stopping you.

Just let me know when you do, so I can have my popcorn ready.
