“When Bush left, it seems like a vacuum opened up and into it rushed bigotry.”

This quote sums up why I'm so saddened by this article. Something has to change.

And it will be you and people who think and feel as you do that will have to do it. Good luck, you have your life's political work cut out for you.

Unfortunately, I won't be helping you. After 22 years as a Republican, I saw what the party was becoming in 2000 and bailed out on them. So did the rest of my family, including my mom, who did GOTV for Goldwater in 1964 and gladly voted for his son as our representative in Congress. We're all now Democrats.

Leaving is the easy way out. I'm either making change or politically dying while trying.

Eh, I think doing what's best for the country comes before doing what's best for the party. And while changing the party's a good cause, if switching sides is what you feel is the better option...

Leaving was easier than you imagine. I left while I was in the middle of divorcing my dyed-in-the-wool Orange County Republican ex-wife. It helped to run away screaming from her politics in the middle of running away screaming from her.

As for the people who took over the GOP during the past 20 years, I had long ago decided they were beyond hope. I've since declared war on them to get my revenge.

Personally, I think you're tilting at windmills. I hope you keep your sanity, Donna Quixote.

Do you ever feel frustrated by the Democrats, though? I understand where you are coming from. I live in Queens, so I am a registered Democrat, but they give me grumbles, too, though it's largely policy-based, so a different issue.

I voted for Barry, Jr. as Ron Paul's VP in 2008. Barry made a few humdinger goofs, but history will redeem him as a man of principle. I see you lived in California before moving to Michigan, then.

I do, but not for the same reasons I get frustrated with Republicans. The GOP rewards people who go for the jugular. The Democrats usually don't. I prefer candidates with killer instinct.

And, yes, I did live in Southern California before moving to Michigan.

The quote is inaccurate. Bush ran his campaign on homophobia.
