this is total fuckery... I heard about this yesterday and its full of WTF

I've heard of these sorts of situations (dropped charges) in the cases of minor drug charges (possession) but THIS?
I dont care WHO he hit, a surgeon or a fast food worker or even a Republican... this is wrong
the prosecutor should be fired ASAP

Business Insider, for its part, defends Erzinger, saying that due to restitution payments, he "might be working for the rest of his life and giving much of his paycheck to the victim." WELL MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE HE DROVE OFF AND LEFT HIM FOR DEAD IN THE STREET

Oh for fuck's sake. I feel so bad for the poor man he hit :( I really hate how rich people can get away with so much more.

"When you're talking about restitution, you don't want to take away his ability to pay."

Of course, there's always his Cayman Islands account, but we wouldn't want to talk about that.

Well, reading further about it, five people were killed.

True. The cases are not the same. But in a hit and run, the guilty party doesn't usually know if someone was killed or not - they're too busy trying to get away. I'm sure you realize I was just pointing out some of the other pertinent differences: black vs. white, and rich vs. not so rich.

I do realize it, and the Colorado case seems insane on its face, too (and I want to read more on it, too). OTOH, 36 years for causing the accident that kills 5 people, fleeing the scene and tampering with evidence doesn't seem particularly outlandish to me.
