Rona Ambrose, minister for the status of women, signalled the federal government's intentions today.

The Ontario Superior Court ruled the laws are unconstitutional because they're contributing to the danger faced by sex- ( Read more... )

well.... not if it is found to be unconstitutional in the Supreme Court, there would have to be new legislation that passed s.1 test of being a reasonable limitation to our charter rights based on the principles of fundamental justice in a free and democratic society. I don't see how this being likely if the SCC dismisses (a potential) appeal.

I'm not so sure. If this is dealt with in the courts, the MLAs do not even have to discuss it. Hell they could even lie about their opinion, because even if every liberal/ndp/bloc/conservative in parliament said they were against this ruling, nothing could be done. Except for passing new legislation with the notwithstanding clause, which is ~possible~ but political suicide.

Honestly though, I do not think it would be a good political move anyways.
I honestly suspect that the majority of Canadians not expected to die within 20 years would support this decision of the court. I do not know about the rest of Canada, but Vancouverites do not want any more dead prostitutes. We've had enough for a lifetime.

The federal government had argued that prostitution is inherently dangerous, no matter where it is practised.

BULLLLLLLLLLLSHIT.

We can discuss other impacts of the sex industry elsewhere, but, as a Nevadan, I firmly call bullshit.

lol I feel really really damn confident the majority of Canadians do not agree with that statement. That is such a looney thing for them to say

They're thinking of pre teen prostitutes and coerced women who are prostitutes, but I'm pretty sure that's not the norm. We can have shelters and support groups for everyone, it's not a problem actually.
