Feds: Arizona is violating the rights of its ELL students

Two federal investigations have concluded that Arizona is violating the 1964 Civil Rights Act by shortchanging thousands of students whose first language is not English.

Unless remedied, the violations could lead to a loss of federal funding for education in Arizona.

Whining about SB1070 is hiding from the real issues. Arizona has been discriminating against English as a Second Language students forever. I do think part of this is the fact that Arizona values education so little that it is 50th in the nation for education spending and we have an education system to prove it. Everyone is allowed to just go on even if they don't know the expected material. The fact that it happens to ESL students as well is not shocking. Still, these kids should be given an opportunity to study as English language learners if it will help them learn. I do hope the feds civil rights suit is successful. I just don't want them to pull the funding because AZ students get little enough support as it is.
