In addition to the volunteer list post the mods are starting a new recurring theme post. What did you do? This is a chance for ONTD_P members to share their achievements volunteering or donating in their community and beyond

I took a summer course at UCLA and it just ended on Friday. Fucking hell, I just hope I PASS . That class kicked my ass. I'm a journalism major, I don't fucking like numbers and graphs and formulas all up in my grill.
I really wanted to volunteer more for GLBT and feminist groups around Columbus OH but... um, it kind of took a backseat to being fired and losing my car and such. ;_;
I've volunteered 20 hours/month for this organization since I turned 21, and it's national, so I encourage any other US members who are at least 21 to look into it if you're trying to figure out a direct way to help abused and neglected children (and their families) in your community. It's also a good way to get insight into the child welfare system (and court system in general) beyond the news items that spring up every now and then.
Oh haha I like this! I might find new places to volunteer at.
But anyway, I volunteered a bit at my local women's shelter. Mainly just stuff having to do with the kids, like spray-painting pots they could decorate later and setting up a water-slide during one of the hottest weeks we've had so far.
*puts on flame resistant pants* Um, I kinda don't like this. I feel it makes volunteering all about the person volunteering. I love the idea of giving information for more volunteering opportunities to everyone though.
These posts should also a place for people to share tactics, strategies, and ideas with other current volunteers. Anyone who has an interest in volunteering but hasn't yet should feel free to come here and ask questions. If you have ideas for making a difference post it here and maybe you can find someone else to work with you.
I don't think it's that big a deal.. sometimes it's nice to hear about peoples experiences, it kind of makes you think 'hey, that sounds like fun I could do that'

ETA: I mean what did you do? What services does the shelter provide? Any memorable personal experiences?
