I really liked the parts where he touched on how the left essentially enables the media. It's SO fucking true. The right has been crowing for decades at some supposed intense liberal bias that doesn't exist. And the reaction from the MSM has been to either A) move further right or B) insert a false parity. It's like so much of the media has forgotten that while there might be two sides to every story, sometimes the validity of those sides are not equal at all. Sometimes one of those sides is insane and hateful, and just because they existed doesn't mean they need to be validated. It doesn't mean you have to give them a forum to speak. Sometimes the truth is just the truth.
Also loved the digs at Rahm Emanuel. Honestly I think making Rahm his chief of staff is the absolute worst decision Obama made going into his presidency. Shit, most people on the left don't even like Rahm (creepy fangirls notwithstanding), and no one on the right likes him either because A) he's a Democrat and B) he's abrasive as hell. So why Obama thought someone who is fairly disliked by both sides of the political spectrum would be able to "get shit done lol!!" is beyond me. I have to think it's because he's part of the Chicago political network, which is sketchy as fuck and where everyone owes each other favors. I don't think Obama is necessarily as bad as a lot of Chicago politicians, but I think he's perhaps a little too comfortable next to the snakes. And to be honest, he's become rather tepid in personality since taking office.
The other thing that's upsetting about this is how chillingly arbitrary their targets seem to be. Not arbitrary in the sense that in Van Jones and Shirley Sherrod are both black; that's entirely deliberate. No, arbitrary in the obscure positions they hold that normally don't get media scrutiny. It's enough to make a person wonder if they zealous right has decided to focus on every government official without white skin, waiting to capitalize on something they say once so they can smear it across the airwaves, the internet, and the print media. Like they sense, just as much as those of us on the left do, the ugly racism that underlies a lot of the opposition to this Presidency, and they want to keep capitalizing on it, lest the bigots who buy into that shit forget that they're not ~VICTIMS OF THE BLACK CONSPIRACY~. After all, the right loses its power if it can't keep its people constantly afraid.
And the press -- the press that is supposed to be an independent check on these things -- has long ago succumbed to their bottom line, eschewing integrity in favor of profit. This is what happens when news becomes entertainment. Depth departs, everything is crunched down to its most banal form, reduced to a catchphrase.
And the Democrats let it happen. Over and over again. The left in this country has been under attack, hell, as Al Gore's book title stated: reason itself has been assaulted.
It's a really depressing political climate right now.
