Oh wow, Ive never in *heard* of InDesign before now to be honest.

I can tell you that Fireworks is a markedly different feel from Photoshop, even while they are both owned by Adobe (though I gather that's because Fireworks was owned by Macromedia before being bought out by Adobe; hence the completely different user interface). There isnt the kind of program compatibility between Photoshop/Fireworks like there used to be between Photoshop/ImageReady.

In fact, Fireworks is so different that the only image editing I primarily do in it is optimizing animations (frame speeds, dithering, dimensions, size, etc) and slapping on text/border layers when I make animated macros/animated icons. Ive never felt satisfied with, for example, the final results of layer adjustment effects, or the masking effects, or even something as simply as transforming an object. Everything feels primitive/"clunkier" in Fireworks than in Photoshop.

So in the end, I use Photoshop to design static images and Fireworks to design animated images -- basically, using them according to their respective strengths (as I see them, anyway; still learning how to use both), hah.
