There was actually an argument on This Week this morning about Brazil and oil, this explains their situation with oil really well.

IA. And the fishermen are probably the ones who know the lay of the land the most, but their boats are too small to be of practical use in the rescue effort, while the ones that are adequately big are crewed by people with a lot less knowhow... of course, the logical thing would be to have locals as "pilots" aboard the bigger ships.

That 'drill baby drill' tag reminds me of the headache I've been having whenever the media shows that clip of Palin saying that. They need to take it off the air and Palin needs to shut her trap about off shore drilling for the time being.

What a catastrophe. It's very telling that the containment devices -the massive concrete boxes- weren't sitting on the shelf. It was that unlikely that the blowout preventer would fail, so unlikely that apparently it wasn't even envisioned as a nightmare scenario. That's bad. That's real bad. Forget Katrina, this is an industrial disaster on the scale of a Chernobyl!

I suspect that a highly improbable catastrophic cascade of events occurred, like what causes plane crashes nowadays. Six sigma outlier stuff.
