I still don't understand the GOP arguments against this. The banks will still have tons of business from other types of loans.

Even education loans! People can still take out private loans to fund their education, just not the government-subsidised kind.

I love using the term socialism to refer to policies that call for more government involvement, but this doesn't fit the bill at all. It's more a reallocation than anything else.
