NGL, these kind of protesters are so annoying to me. -_-;

The guy got arrested. Okay. You don't think it's fair. That's fine. But don't hinder an investigation and then bitch about it when they arrest your ass too.

Pretty sure every single person just shut up when they were arrested. Getting arrested in support of a cause in an american tradition that these people were practicing.

Bitch as in flailing around and practically resisting arrest, not just verbal outcry. And, yeah, it's usually best to shut up, because they can use what you say and do against you if it goes to court.

an american tradition
I hope by that you mean the protesting and not the actual weed smoking. Because if you meant the later, you are just being ridiculous.

George Washington also owned slaves. As did many other American presidents. Shall we allow that again since it's an "American tradition" too?

One is a victimless crime, the other isn't. It's a false equivalency.

GTFO My debate was not between slaves and weed (as weed is obviously superior). My point was using "an American tradition" as a reason to justify something is bullshit.

It's used with irony, I'm sure. Besides, it's a pointed statement that marijuana use is not new, but it's proliferated among the lower classes and the common America and is used as a tool of supression. Plenty of our Presidents, of our ~elite media figures~ can smoke weed and reference it without a hint of irony, and some common Americans through a protest, get arrested for the same non-crime.

You are preaching to the choir about the unfairness of weed in politics and government! I agree with and understand all of that.

My only qualm was with the other poster's statement.

Okay, I don't even spoke weed, but these two things are not comparable.

Again. It was not between weed and slaves. It was saying "using the fact that something is 'an American tradition' is not a legit justification for why that thing should be allowed".

As for further clarification, weed should be allowed.

As far as I remember from reading, no one can say for certain if Washington smoked weed (though I would not have blamed him if he did, knowing the battles in his cabinet). He grew hemp, definitely. And hemp was used for everything in those days -- the rough draft of our Constitution was written on it.

not just the rough draft. also the final draft.

It was good quality. States should be behind growing hemp for mass production to export.

A pair of hemp pants can last 100 years. Levi's would have a fit!

Levi's would adapt or die, for all I care. Just think of how much of our trade deficit could be paid off with hemp, and how much of the national debt with heavily taxed marijuana. This does not mean I think people should have it in their possession illegally, but make no mistake I'd rather it be decriminalized, legalized, capitalized, and regulated.
