Saying "This is a health care bill, not an abortion bill." doesn't make sense because abortion should be part of health care. They are not mutually exclusive.
And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions.
Well, obviously, because something has been in place for a long time, it shouldn't be changed.
I dunno, I kind of want to be pissed at him but I really can't. I think he's just pissed off that what should be a fight over health care is morphing into an abortion fight. I mean, sticking that sort of amendment on there is like sticking a marriage law on a hate crimes bill--no one's saying they're not connected, just that they're giant massively controversial topics that deserve to be addressed/legislated on their own and not as each other's footnotes.
Plus, the status quo comment makes it pretty clear he wants to either strip the amendment or reduce it to just a 'the hyde amendment shall apply to this bill.'
