I know "he's a nice guy, funny, etc etc" but how far is that taking him??
How far did it take Reagan?
The problem with Romney and Palin is that, especially when they're pitted against each other, they each only seem like half a person - Mitt has experience and seems to possess a reasonable number of IQ points, but he also projects all the warmth and personal integrity of a bucket of live eels, whereas Sarah only seems so emotionally genuine precisely because nobody could believe that anyone could be that fucking dumb if they've REHEARSED.
By contrast, even speaking as someone who finds Mike Huckabee's policies and beliefs to be utterly reprehensible ... I still find myself LIKING him, as a GUY. And if a far-left liberal like ME feels that way, then the dude is fucking DANGEROUS among moderate and independent voters. The reason the far-right hates him is because he balances out his batshit religious zealotry with something remotely approaching real economic populism, which I suspect a lot of fundamentalist evangelicals secretly crave, but will never admit to liking as long as a black man is supporting it.
What's even WORSE for the GOP is that, because Huckabee's religious right cred is so strong, if HE loses, then they won't be able to blame it on Huck being a "RINO," unless they want to risk alienating their own base. If he wins the election, he fucks the economic conservatives, and if he loses, he fucks both the economic and social conservatives. In short, he's the worst of all possible worlds for the GOP, and that's precisely why he's their frontrunner.
ehhh they already call him a RINO. Trust, it'll be blamed on his populist angle when he loses.
I think this
is what will always hurt Mittens, no matter how much he flip-flops, he'll always be seen as a New England Rockefeller RINO.
I don't know though, they say Palin and Huckabee have the same base, so why's Palin losing popularity? these people are supposed to like her the more the media piles on her. The Republican pundits sure do. It's not the way her intelligence is perceived, it's got to be something else. Could be the Levi brouhaha.

The Republican elite will try to spin it that way, no doubt, but the problem is, if they do, the Republican base WILL reject it, because when it comes to the issues that count with those folks (guns, God and gays), Huck is the MOST "real" Republican of any of 'em.

Palin's gender alone always made her a bitter pill for the Dominionists to swallow, even though she espoused their message, because while they could accept her in the short term as a possible means of pitting white women against black men in '08, now that they've had some time to think about it, they've realized HOLY SHIT WE ALMOST PROMOTED A WOMAN TO THE PRESIDENCY, and especially when you have an equally conservative candidate like Huck, why risk THAT?

So true. They may have liked her, but deep down, (and sometimes not so deep down), they think she should be at home tending the offspring, making more.
Palin seems to prefer winging it, which is exactly what you want to do when you're going for a populistic Hail Mary short-term campaign of desperation, but running without a plan can backfire in incredible and painful ways, and it really only works to your advantage while the spotlight is on you.
Huckabee, by contrast, is a much more patient and seasoned politician. He's more open to long-term planning and strategy and letting his advisors and proxies assist him rather than insisting on calling the shots himself.
Following Huckabee's strategy is how you succeed long-term: build a movement, keep up with your supporters, and don't depend too strongly on media attention to maintain your visibility and credibility. Palin's strategy of total dependence on media attention stops working when that media attention trickles out. (You might also consider that Huckabee attempts to build movements whereas Palin is content to simply ride them. Once the movement she's riding peters down, she goes through a slump until she can successfully attach herself to a new one.)
