:( :( :( :(

Say what you will about his politics, anyone with that much respect for language is OK by me.

Exactly. I have some problems with him (he was very partial to the Libby/Miller side of Plamegate, and no one fucks with my bb PFitz) but the guy was fascinated with language and made an effort to share it with people. And even if he was mostly a partisan Republican he wasn't stupid or nasty about it.

mte. I'm only 26, but it seems like politics is taking a turn for the uncivil and unreasonable. I'm sure every generation has said that, but I can't help feeling it.

I loved his "on words" column

I certainly never agreed with his politics, but I absolutely loved all of his observations about language and the usage of words.

He was one of the few conservative pundits who I could tolerate. It too bad the GOP actively discourages people like him from being a part of their party.

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but ontd_p does that whole "omg 2009 is the worst!!!" thing as well?

idk, the villain-ization of a year is odd to me.

It's like when you have a shitty day you say it's the worst day of your life. It's not really the day's fault, but that's when it all happened.
